코로나(COVID-19) 확산 시기에 은퇴를 결정한 대학 운동선수가 겪은 갈등
본 연구는 코로나19(COVID-19) 확산 시기에 은퇴를 결정 한 대학 운동선수 출신 4명을 선정하여 그들이 경험한 갈등에 대해 이해하고 해석하여 의미를 도출하기 위해 실시한 연구이며, 연구 목적에 따라 초점 집단 인터뷰를 실시하여 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 운동선수에게 팬데믹 현상은 정상적인 훈련이 이루어지지 못했기 때문에 선수들에게 많은 혼란스러움을 안겨주었고, 연이은 대회 개최 취소는 선수들에게 보다 큰 혼란을 야기 시킨 것으로 나타났다. 시기적으 로 운동선수들이 동계 훈련 기간을 마치고 시즌을 앞두고 있었기 때문에 보다 심리적 허탈감이 컷을 것으로 생각되며, 이러한 허탈함이 지속되면 될수록 목표가 사라짐에 따라 상실감과 권태감 등을 느꼈던 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 은퇴 결정 요인에 대해서는 시합의 부재와 수차례 여러 가지의 심리적 갈등을 경험하면서 그들은 불확실한 미래에 대한 걱정과 반복 되는 무의미한 일상에 따른 것으로 나타났고, 세부적으로 시합취소로 인한 진로 및 기회의 문제, 사라진 목표와 기약 없는 기다림에 대한 두려움과 권태감, 두려움을 극복하기 위한 생각의 전환은 곧 다양한 심리적 갈등이 시작된 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 과정을 거쳐 은퇴를 결정 한 선수들은 새로운 사회에 적응하는 단계에서“사회적응”에 대한 갈등이 새롭게 나타 났다. 그들은 새로운 사회에 적응하는 과정에서 평소 운동선수 생활하면서 고민하지 못했던 부분들을 고민하고 어려워 한 것으로 나타나 은퇴 전, 은퇴 후 선수들을 위한 교육이나 상담 프로그램의 보급 및 저변확대가 필요할 것으로 생각된다.
Conflict Experienced by University Athletes Who Decided to Retire during the Spread of COVID-19
This study selected four former university athletes who decided to retire during the spread of COVID-19. This study was conducted to understand, interpret, and derive meaning from the conflicts they experienced. The results obtained through focus group interviews according to the purpose of the study are as follows. First, the pandemic phenomenon caused confusion for athletes, and the successive cancellations of competitions caused even greater confusion for athletes. Because the athletes had finished their winter training period and were preparing for the season, it was thought that they would have experienced a greater sense of psychological desolation. The longer this detachment continued, the more they felt a sense of loss and boredom as their goals disappeared. Second, regarding the factors determining retirement, problems with career paths and opportunities due to competition cancellation, fear and boredom about lost goals and endless waiting, and a change in thinking to overcome fear were found to be the beginning of various psychological conflicts. Athletes who decided to retire after going through this process experienced new conflicts about “social adaptation” during the stage of adapting to a new society. Accordingly, it is believed that it is necessary to disseminate and expand the base of education and counseling programs for athletes before and after retirement.
