Dance is a form of synthetic art that encompasses visual and auditory senses. The component of music is considered an inseparable artistic companion to dance performance. In a sense, a dancer in practice is continuously exposed to a series of structured sounds in the form of music. Thus, in this research, we have quantified the students’ exposure to environmental noise in terms of sound level and exposure time in professional dance classes in college setting. The potential damage to the students’ hearing capacity is explored. Sound meter was employed during dance class in S university in order to measure the sound level and exposure time during class sessions. The result was obtained for each subset of dance major, and was compared to the standard threshold value based on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration(OSHA) Standards. Results showed that the level of noise during one session of professional dance class does meet the OSHA standards for occupational noise environment. However, with the accumulation of class hours, the total level of exposure may lead to hearing loss. Considering that the usage of hearing protection as in other occupational setting is practically impossible during dance practice, an active construction of guidelines for recording and playing music for professional dance majors is necessary.
